The Worm Moon symbolizes transformation, renewal, the end of winter’s dormancy, transition, resilience, nature, growth, change, and resistance—a perfect time for stories that reflect these themes.
Below is a list of books I personally feel align with this energy. We need to choose our March book by the end of the weekend so everyone has time to get a copy before the 12th.
If you have any alternate suggestions, feel free to share! If needed, we’ll take a poll to decide. Looking forward to reading with you all! ✨
1. The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
Much like the Worm Moon’s call for transformation, The Alchemist is a tale of self-discovery, destiny, and personal awakening. Santiago’s journey across the desert reflects the cyclical nature of change, growth, and the pursuit of one’s true purpose. As the world awakens in spring, this book reminds us to listen to our hearts, embrace uncertainty, and trust that the universe is guiding us forward.
2. The Overstory by Richard Powers
Echoing the Worm Moon’s theme of renewal, The Overstory explores the deep and intricate relationship between humans and nature, particularly the resilience of trees. Just as the earth thaws and life begins anew, this novel reminds us of the long cycles of growth, survival, and rebirth found in both forests and human connections. It’s a meditation on change—slow, steady, and inevitable.
3. Wintering: The Power of Rest and Retreat in Difficult Times by Katherine May
As the Worm Moon signals the end of winter’s dormancy, Wintering explores how embracing life’s quiet, reflective seasons is essential for renewal. Katherine May encourages us to see personal hardships as necessary periods of rest and transformation, just as nature awakens in its own time. This book is a beautiful companion to the season, reminding us that growth follows stillness, and spring always returns.
4. The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden
Set in the icy landscapes of Russia, this novel aligns with the Worm Moon’s theme of transition—from winter’s hold to the first whispers of spring. Vasya, a girl with a deep connection to nature and folklore, must embrace change, face the unknown, and step into her power. Like the world stirring beneath the frost, this book is about awakening—both magical and personal.
5. Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
Kya’s story mirrors the Worm Moon’s symbolism of resilience and renewal. Abandoned and left to navigate life on her own, she finds growth and survival in the rhythms of nature. As the marshland awakens and thrives with the seasons, so does Kya—proving that even in solitude, new beginnings and transformation are possible.
6. Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver
A novel deeply rooted in the cycles of nature, growth, and renewal, Prodigal Summer perfectly embodies the spirit of the Worm Moon. As the season shifts, so do the lives of the characters—each experiencing their own awakening, rebirth, and reconnection with the land. This book celebrates the interwoven rhythms of nature and humanity, reminding us that life is constantly renewing itself.
7. The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich
Set during a time of immense change and resistance, this novel reflects the Worm Moon’s theme of transformation and perseverance. As Thomas and Patrice navigate personal and political upheaval, their journeys parallel the awakening of both the land and their own inner strength. It is a story of endurance, renewal, and the fight to protect what matters most—just as spring reclaims the earth after winter’s hold.
