Review: The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich

The Night Watchman is a deeply moving and powerful novel, inspired in part by the life of Erdrich’s own grandfather. The story follows Thomas, a night watchman at a factory who tirelessly fights against Native dispossession and works to protect his Chippewa community from the devastating effects of proposed “emancipation” policies. His quiet strength and unwavering commitment to his people are inspiring, though I found his character to be a bit understated—I would have loved to see even more depth given to his remarkable story.

Alongside Thomas, we meet Pixie (Patrice), his determined and resourceful niece, whose own journey adds another compelling layer to the narrative. While these two characters drive the heart of the novel, the cast of lively and sometimes dysfunctional supporting characters adds richness and complexity to the story. Their voices reflect the resilience, humor, and struggles of the community.

This book completely engulfed me—I flew through it in just a couple of nights because I was so invested in the unfolding events and the fate of the characters. Erdrich’s writing beautifully captures the tension between tradition and change, as well as the sacrifices made in the fight for justice.

I highly recommend The Night Watchman—it’s a story that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page. I truly enjoyed it!
